Lady Justice has been a fixture of societies around the world for nearly 2,000 years. The allegorical figure is a representation of the moral force that guides, or should guide, judicial systems around the world. Lady Justice originated in Ancient Roman art during the reign of Emperor Augustus. The Romans referred to her as Iustitia and held her in similar regard to the Ancient Greek goddess Dike. Modern cultures have adopted the Roman imagery of Lady Justice as a symbol of the justice system in democratic nations.

On the obverse, you will find the Gibraltarian coat of arms. The coat of arms for Gibraltar is set on the smaller shield at the bottom of this design, the one in which you will see a castle with a key beneath it. Above this, the Royal Arms of England features the quartered shield of the United Kingdom, an Imperial Crown, and the heraldic Lion of England and Unicorn of Scotland.

The reverse features a unique vision of Justitia. In this design element, Lady Justice is shown at the top of a mountain with a raised sword in their right hand and scales extended out in her left hand. Though she is shown to be in motion, she remains blindfolded as a symbol of impartiality. The field includes inscriptions of her name and a date mark, with seven stars beneath her figure that are split three to the left and four to the right.

A British Overseas Territory occupying just 2.6 square miles at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltars landscape is dominated by the massive Rock of Gibraltar. This plot of land at the chokepoint between the African and European continents is the northern gate of the region where the Mediterranean Sea spills out into the Atlantic Ocean. Since 1713, Gibraltar has been a part of the United Kingdom as a territory.
