One of Americas greatest classic coin designs is the Buffalo Nickel. Sometimes referred to in its day as the Indian Head Nickel, this design from James Earle Fraser was used on the nations 5-cent piece from 1913 to 1938, and today it is replicated on countless products ranging from the US Mints American Gold Buffalo bullion coin to silver rounds.

Round Highlights:

  • Replica design of the famous Buffalo Nickel
  • Produced by Sunshine Minting in the United States.
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Obverse includes the image of the Native American tribal member in right-profile relief.
  • Reverse features the depiction of the American bison in left-profile relief.

The Buffalo Nickel debuted from the United States Mint in 1913. It was designed by James Earle Fraser during the administration of William H. Taft, and Fraser brought his lifes experience growing up on the plains of Minnesota and the Dakotas to bear in the design. A native of Winona, Minnesota, Fraser traveled extensively throughout the region in the late 19th century with his father, encountering the American bison and interacting with Native American tribes.

On the obverse of the 1oz Buffalo Silver Round is the right-profile portrait of a Native American. In the upper-right portion of the design fields edge is an engraving of Liberty. Fraser would not say for decades who the inspiration was for this Native American design, eventually admitting that he combined the facial and physical features of three individuals to create the image.

The reverse of all Buffalo Silver Rounds include the left-profile of an American bison standing on an outcrop patch of dirt. His original bison design was based upon Black Diamond, a resident of New York Citys Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century. Engravings on this side also remain similar to the Buffalo Nickel, with United States of America and E Pluribus Unum above the bison. Instead of a face value below, you’ll see only the weight, purity, and metal content of the round.

They come in plastic tubes of 20 rounds each.
