The Southern Skies Series from the Royal Australian Mint celebrates the famed Crux constellation visible in the southern hemisphere. The Crux centres on four stars that have become known as the Southern Cross. The name derives from the cross-shaped or kite-shaped arrangement of the stars when viewed in the sky.

Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of the coins in the 2021 Australian Silver Beneath the Southern Skies Series. This effigy is the latest sixth-generation effigy of the Queen to grace Australian coins. It was designed in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint and was initially adopted by Australian mints in 2018. It depicts the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem.

Multiple symbols of Australia feature on the reverse field of the 2021 1oz Silver Beneath the Southern Skies Coins. The Southern Cross, as depicted on the Australian flag and in this design, comes with four larger stars forming the common Crux constellation and a smaller star within the lower-right field of the constellation. The Australian continent features in the background with the island of Tasmania and Australia’s Antarctic lands.
