The Design
The obverse is a reviewed version of the Indian Head Nickel, issued in 1913, whose design was created by James Earle Fraser. The image depicts a right-profile bust of a Native American Indian, combining traces from different tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The inscriptions engraved on the outer rim are “LIBERTY” in front of the Chief’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” corresponding to the artist’s initial on the lower left.
The reverse design is the image that names the coin: a giant American Bison in an upstanding position. Along with the picture, the words: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arch over the buffalo. “IN GOD WE TRUST” lies aside near the animal’s muzzle. The coin’s information referring to weight, metal content, fineness, and face value is beneath it. They read. “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”
The Mintage
Unlike the American Eagles, produced in several facilities of the US Mint, the West Point branch is the only facility that produces Gold Buffalos.
Each coin contains 1 oz of fine .9999 pure gold in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, with 32.7 mm of diameter (1.287 in) and a thickness of 2.95 mm (0.116 in) with reeded edges.
The coins bear a $50 denomination and have legal tender status guaranteed by the US Federal Government.
