2023 Australia’s Most Dangerous – Australian Box Jellyfish 1oz .999 Silver Bullion Coin

The gold and silver Australian Box Jellyfish coins are the fourth release in the Royal Australian Mint’s “Australia’s Most Dangerous” investment series. As the most dangerous marine creature that inhabits Australia’s northern coastal waters, the Box Jellyfish is both feared and respected. The coins’ unique design features a “smack” of jellyfish – the collective noun for a group of jellyfish.

HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE

The Royal Australian Mint’s “Australian’s Most Dangerous” investment series launched successfully with the release of the Red Back Spider coins, followed by the Great White Shark and Desert Scorpion coins. The Australian Box Jellyfish is featured in the fourth and most recent series.

Occupying the country’s northern waters from Karratha in Western Australia to Mackay in Queensland, the Australian Box Jellyfish, sometimes referred to as the Sea Wasp, is most often found in summer, close to shore. Unbeknown to some, these jellyfish are found in coastal rivers as well as the ocean.

The largest species in the Box Jellyfish family, the Australian Box Jellyfish is named for its box-like shaped bell that can reach up to 30 centimetres in diameter. With up to 60 tentacles extending up to 3 metres long, this jellyfish can swim up to nearly eight kilometres an hour, unlike other jellyfish that float passively on the current.

Struck by Royal Australian Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a mintage of 25,000.

DESIGN

The reverse features a “smack”, or group, of Australian Box Jellyfish swimming. The inscription “AUSTRALIAN BOX JELLYFISH” as well as the coin’s weight and fineness are displayed on the reverse.

The coin’s obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark, the 2023 year-date as well as the monetary denomination.
