Description
Introducing to Bullion now, the 2022 Royal Mint Queens Beasts “White Greyhound of Richmond” 1oz Platinum Coin.
Originating with the royals associated with the House of Lancaster, the White Greyhound remains attached to the House of Tudor as it was King Henry VII brought the greyhound to this Royal Arms as a supporter of his badges.
The White Greyhound of Richmond originated as a badge of John of Gaunt in the 14th century. John of Gaunt was the 1st Duke of Lancaster and served as a steward/earl for the Honour of Richmond. The greyhound was a favoured dog breed in Northern England and often used in the Honour of Richmond as a supporter of the badge. The White Greyhound remained associated with the Honour of Richmond for the next century until Edmund Tudor was created Earl of Richmond. Edmund Tudor was the father of King Henry VII, victor in the Wars of the Roses and the first monarch in the House of Tudor.
On the obverse face of the coin is an image of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile effigy of the Queen is the fifth-generation design to feature on British coins during her reign. It was created in July 2015 by Jody Clark and debuted on British coins with the 2016 date mark.
The reverse side has a depiction of the White Greyhound of Richmond. The White Greyhound is seated with its front paws dangling over the front of a shield that is the seal of the House of Tudor.
