Description
The 2021 Royal Mint Valiant 1oz silver coin is one of the more unique silver bullion collections based on how it was introduced. Most collections start with a 1 oz silver coin and grow from there, but the Royal Mint launched this beautiful series in 2018 with a 10 oz coin available first and didn’t issue a 1 oz coin until 2019.
The Valiant series focuses on the image of St. George as he slays a dragon. The image of St. George battling a dragon is a popular one in British history and that of the Christian church. His figure has appeared on the prominent Great Britain Gold Sovereign coin in a different design since at least 1817.
The reverse features the image of St. George on horseback as he slays a dragon. This artwork was created specifically for the Valiant series by Etienne Millner in 2018. Folklore states that the hill upon which St. George dispatched the dragon grass and plants no longer grow after the ground was poisoned by the blood of the dragon.
The obverse features the fifth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The longest-reigning monarch in British history, Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in a design created in 2015 by Jody Clark. This effigy captures Her Majesty at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem. Also known as the Royal Diadem, the Queen only wears this crown during the State Opening of Parliament.
